MGCF October Newsletter

Dear Friends and Supporters of the Community Foundation,

As the leaves change color, we find ourselves reflecting on the tremendous growth our community has seen this year. October brings new opportunities to support the community and prepare for the upcoming holiday season.

Creating a Strong, Vibrant, Caring Community

Donor Impact:

I was supported by the Unity Health Education Fund Scholarship as part of the University of Michigan’s Inteflex Program. I graduated Buchanan High School in 1994, and then graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1997 and with an MD in 2003. I spent time researching viruses in head and neck cancer, and I led a national student organization during my time in medical school. Scholarships allowed me the freedom to follow my passions and to serve the health of people in the state of Michigan. As a skull base surgeon and the Student Affairs Dean at the University of Michigan Medical School, I’m fortunate to see upcoming physician leaders from southwest Michigan, and I give back to Michigan Gateway to honor the community that supported me and to support the leaders of tomorrow.

Junior Achievement of Northern In. Inc.

Junior Achievement is coming to Sam Adams for JA in a Day. They asked for $3,000 to support the programming of JA in a Day at Sam Adams Elementary School.

This program will benefit 370 students, 72% of these students come from economically disadvantage families. Part of this program will help build better futures for themselves and understand different career opportunities.

We funded the whole grant project at $3,000.00 and are excited to see the results from JA in a Day at Sam Adams Elementary School.

Youth Advisory Council (YAC)

Our YAC had their first meeting of the year this past Sunday. The meeting was started off with a fun team building exercise. We had a busy meeting, greeting all the new members, discussing their goals for the year with their committees and talking about future YAC service projects.

YAC Mini-Grant

It is that time of the year again for mini-grants, what is a mini-grant?

To introduce our fellow students to the concept of a community foundation and its work, we are offering up to $500 for student-written grant requests that fit the criteria of YAC YOUTH GRANTS.
